General Questions
Is Lejonjon Beard Care made with natural ingredients?
Yes. We focus on using naturally derived, high-quality ingredients wherever possible. While not every ingredient is 100% organic, our priority is skin safety, product performance, and ingredient transparency.
Is mineral oil safe to use on my beard?
We don't use mineral oil in any of our products. It's a petroleum byproduct that sits on top of the skin rather than absorbing, which can clog pores and actually make dryness and flaking worse over time. We use cold-pressed Jojoba and Sweet Almond oil instead. Learn more about what to avoid in our ingredients guide.
Do you offer gift wrapping or special packaging?
At this stage, we don't offer gift wrapping, we prioritize the quality and protection of your product during transit, all orders are carefully packed with a good amount of bubblewrap. You can add a personal message at checkout if sending a gift directly.
Can I buy Lejonjon Beard Care products in stores?
Yes! We partner with selected stockists across New Zealand although product variety will vary from store to store, please check what is currently available directly with them. No stockists currently hold any of our kits and combos. You can view our full list of Lejonjon stockists.

Beard Care and Routine
What products should I start with?
We suggest starting with a beard oil and a boar bristle brush. Check out our Trio Pack or Ultimate Beard Care Gift Pack for a great *Cover all bases package*
What is beard oil and what does it do?
Beard oil hydrates the skin underneath your beard and conditions the hair itself, cutting down on itch, flaking, and that wiry, unmanageable feel. It's the product we'd recommend starting with above all others. Full details in our What Is Beard Oil? guide.
What is beard balm and what does it do?
Beard balm is a leave-in product that conditions, softens, and lightly holds your beard in place, think of it as a cross between beard oil and a light styling product. It's thicker than oil, so it seals in moisture and helps tame flyaways or shape your beard through the day. Full details in our What Is Beard Balm? guide.
What is beard butter and what does it do?
Beard butter is a richer, beeswax-free leave-in conditioner. It's best used at night or as a deep-hydration step for drier beards, softening hair without the light hold you get from balm. Full details in our What Is Beard Butter? guide.
What is beard wash and do I need it?
Beard wash is a mild cleanser made for facial hair, regular shampoo is often too harsh and strips the natural oils your beard and skin need. If you're washing your beard regularly, a dedicated beard wash will keep it cleaner without drying it out. Full details in our What Is Beard Wash? guide.
Beard oil vs balm vs butter - what's the difference?
Oil hydrates the skin and hair and absorbs quickly. Balm adds light hold and styling on top of that. Butter is richer again, a deep leave-in conditioner best used at night or on drier beards. Most people use all three together rather than choosing one. See our full Oil vs Balm vs Butter breakdown.
What about beard wax - how does it compare to oil, balm and butter?
We don't sell a dedicated beard wax, and for most beards we wouldn't recommend one - wax gives a stiffer, stronger hold than balm but can be harder to wash out and doesn't condition the hair the way balm or butter do. Beard balm gives you a similar (lighter) hold with real conditioning benefits, so it's what we'd suggest instead. If you're after wax for styling a moustache specifically, that's a different job - check out our Moustache Wax range.
Is beard oil a scam - does it actually work?
No - beard oil has a real, well-understood job: it hydrates the skin underneath your beard and conditions the hair, which reduces itch, flaking, and that dry, wiry feel. What it won't do is make hair grow somewhere it genetically doesn't - that's where a lot of the "scam" skepticism (fairly) comes from with growth-focused marketing. For the full picture, see our guide on what beard oil can and can't do for growth.
Is sea salt spray good for my beard?
We don't recommend it. Sea salt spray is designed for scalp hair and works by drying it out to create texture and volume - but beard hair and the skin underneath it are already more prone to dryness, so the same effect that "textures" scalp hair just dehydrates and damages a beard over time. For the full explanation, read why we don't recommend sea salt spray for beards.
Beard oil or balm first? (And where does butter fit in?)
Wash first to clean without stripping natural oils, then apply beard oil to hydrate the skin and hair, and finish with balm or butter to lock in moisture and add hold or softness. For a full breakdown of what each product does and when to use it, read our guide: Beard Wash, Oil, Balm or Butter?
How often should I use each product?
Beard Wash: Every 2 - 3 days (daily if exposed to dust or dirt).
Beard Oil: 1 - 2 times a day, especially after showering.
Beard Balm/Butter: 1- 2 times a day or as needed after oiling, for styling and locking in moisture.
Not sure how many drops to use or when? Our full guide to using beard oil properly covers amounts by beard length and the best time of day to apply.
Which oils are best for beards?
We use only cold-pressed oils like Jojoba and Sweet Almond - with no chemical distillation.
Should I apply beard oil before bed?
You can! Our reccomendation is first thing in the morning after showering, getting ready etc.
Can I use beard oil and beard balm together?
Absolutely. Beard oil treats the skin and hair for itch and beard flaking, while beard balm conditions, softens, locks in moisture and provides light hold. For best results, apply beard oil first, followed by beard balm.
Should I use beard butter at night?
Yes! Beard butter can be used before bed or as a daily leave in conditioner and softner it deeply conditions and repairs your beard creating a softer, healthier beard.
Which direction should I brush my beard?
Brush upward first to detangle and lift the hairs, then downward to shape and style, doing both gives the fullest, neatest result. Under the chin, brush gently downward if you're early in your growth, or upward then guide outward once your beard is fuller. For the full step-by-step method, see our Ultimate Guide to Beard Brushing.
How do I trim my beard with scissors?
Work with a fine-tooth comb to lift and separate small sections, then trim just the tips that stick out past the comb rather than cutting in bulk. Scissors give you more control and fewer split ends than a trimmer, especially for shaping the cheek line, neckline, and moustache. For the full step-by-step method, see our guide to trimming and tidying your beard.
How do I get rid of beard dandruff (beardruff)?
Beard dandruff, or "beardruff," is usually caused by dry skin underneath your beard rather than the hair itself. Regular beard oil use, a mild beard wash, and avoiding harsh soaps will fix most cases. For the full breakdown of causes and fixes, check out our complete guide to beard dandruff.
What's the best routine for growing a thicker beard?
The best beard growth routine includes patience, daily beard oil use, regular washing with a mild beard wash, using a boar bristle brush to stimulate, and avoiding frequent trimming in the early stages. Our best advice is let your beard grow for 6months no less to see what your true growth looks like, consistency is key!
Do derma rollers, beard serums, or growth oils work?
From our testing, they don't. We believe they're just marketing gimmicks and this is why we won't sell them. See the evidence on whether derma rollers actually work for beard growth, and our breakdown of why most beard growth products are a scam. Grow your beard for 6 months, no less, maintain basic beard hygiene and care, it's very likely your patches and weak spots will all grow in with time.
