Goatees are sharp, low maintenance, and forgiving on patchy cheeks. The trick is clean lines and healthy hair. Here’s how to grow it out, shape it, and keep it soft without itch or flakes.
How to grow and maintain a Classic Goatee
Shave the cheeks back to your natural growth zone and let the chin and moustache run for 2 to 4 weeks. Keep the basic neckline and cheeks clean shaven. If skin feels dry, itchy or flaky, you can use a beard oil to keep both these issues at bay.
- Wash with Beard Wash 2 to 4 times per week to reduce flakes without stripping natural oils.
- Moisturise skin and hair each morning with a small amount of Beard Oil
- If growth is wiry or coarse, add a pea-sized amount of Beard Butter or Beard balm after applying the beard oil.

How to shape a goatee
- Comb hair down so it sits naturally.
- Outline the shape first with a trimmer or razor. Start wide, then tighten the edges. Keep both sides even and utilize a mirror while shaping.
- Use a trimmer with your desired guard to maintain trimming length, start with a gaurd larger than your desired length, you can always go shorter but have to grow back out any required lengths.
- Tidy the soul patch and under-lip area with Beard and Moustache trimming scissors, razor or electric trimmer. Don't try to perfect the hair daily. Small clean-ups twice a week are enough.
- Finish with a fingertip of Beard Balm to condition and control edges with a light hold.

Goatee styles
- Classic goatee - Chin only, clean cheeks.
- Van Dyke - Pointed chin with a disconnected moustache.
- Circle beard - Goatee connected to moustache for a full outline.
- Short boxed goatee - Tighter, neat lines that suit most face shapes.
Pick the style that matches your growth pattern rather than forcing what the hair cannot do. Keep the outline 1 to 2 mm inside your strongest growth for a sharper look.
