A Week in the Life of a Beard: My Grooming Routine
Every beard has its own rhythm, and after years of testing and tweaking, this is the routine that works for me. If you want a beard that stays clean, soft, itch-free, and shaped — this daily routine is a great place to start. Scroll to the bottom for a printable weekly routine chart.
Step 1: Morning Shower & Beard Wash
I shower every morning and wet my beard with warm water — not cold (realistically, who’s choosing cold showers?). Then I use about 5 pumps of beard wash, depending on how dirty my beard is and how long it's gotten. I apply it directly to the beard, lather, and leave it in for a few minutes before rinsing.
Step 2: Drying the Beard
I gently pat it dry with a clean towel — not rub. Leaving it slightly damp helps with oil absorption. Rubbing = frizz, so take it easy here to save time styling later.
Step 3: Beard Oil for Hydration
After I’m dressed, I apply 5 pumps of beard oil — either directly into the beard or into my palms first. I work it right into the skin and through the beard to lock in moisture and reduce itch and flaking.
Step 4: Balm or Butter for Conditioning & Hold
I apply a fingertip of beard balm or beard butter, depending on the day. Balm gives hold and control. Butter offers more hydration and softness. I warm it in my palms and apply from the bottom up to the sideburns and back down.
Step 5: Brushing or Combing
Using a beard brush or comb, I brush outward to detangle and distribute product, then down for shape. Learn more in our guide on brushing techniques.
Step 6: Quick Trimming
Twice a week I do a tidy-up: trimming flyaways, cleaning up my lip line, and shaving my neck and cheek lines. If you’re unsure how to do this, check out our guide on how to trim your beard properly.

About 5 pumps works for a medium beard. Adjust depending on length and density.
