The Beginner’s Guide to Beard Care

New to growing a beard? Or maybe you're already rocking some growth but feeling overwhelmed by all the products out there? No worries — we’re here to make it simple. At Lejonjon, we know every beard is different. This guide will walk you through the core steps to grow, maintain, and style your beard without the fluff.

Step 1: Wash the Right Way

The biggest mistake we see beginners make? Using head shampoo, regular soap, or face wash on their beard. These strip away natural oils and leave you with dry, brittle hair and dreaded beard dandruff.

Swap it out for a beard-specific wash. Ours is formulated to clean dirt and dead skin without drying out your beard.

How often should you wash?

  • 2–3 times a week is perfect for most people.
  • If you work in a dusty/dirty environment, wash daily.
  • Have heavy beard dandruff? Wash daily for 1–2 weeks, then return to 2–3x weekly.

Always follow with beard oil and balm to keep moisture locked in.

Step 2: Hydrate Daily with Beard Oil

If you only start with one product, let it be beard oil. Our premium beard oils keep the skin underneath hydrated, stop itchiness (especially in early growth), and make your beard softer and more manageable.

How to apply beard oil:

  1. Start with 3–5 drops in your palm (adjust depending on beard length).
  2. Rub between your hands and work it deep into the beard and skin.
  3. Use a brush or comb to evenly distribute.

Step 3: Style with Balm, Butter & Brushes

As your beard grows longer, you’ll want to shape and condition it. This is where beard balm and beard butter come in:

  • Balm gives light hold and helps tame flyaways.
  • Butter adds deep hydration and leaves your beard feeling soft and nourished.

Use a boar bristle brush or wooden comb to train your beard’s growth direction and spread product evenly.

Bonus tip: Patchy beard? Stick with your routine and give it time. Most areas fill in naturally over a few months.

Step 4: Trim & Tidy Regularly

You don’t need to chop it all off, but regular trims keep things neat and prevent split ends.

  • Use sharp scissors or a trimmer for flyaways.
  • Shape up your cheek line and neckline.
  • Use a beard shaping tool (we’re working on one!) to guide even cuts.

Step 5: Get the Right Kit

Ready to start your routine? Grab one of our beard care kits. Whether you want the essentials (like oil and wash) or a full grooming pack, we’ve got a bundle to suit your beard’s stage and budget.
