How To Use Beard Wash

How to Use Beard Wash

It’s always a good day when your beard looks clean, smells great, and feels soft. A solid beard wash is the foundation for that. But not all washes are created equal — and definitely not all are made for beards. In this guide, we’ll break down how to use beard wash properly and why it matters.

What Is Beard Wash?

Beard wash (also known as beard shampoo) is a product specifically designed to clean your facial hair and the skin underneath without stripping away the natural oils your body produces — unlike regular shampoo. These oils, known as sebum, are essential for healthy beard growth and keeping itch and beardruff at bay.

Why Not Use Regular Shampoo?

Regular shampoo is made for head hair, which is very different from beard hair. It often contains stronger detergents that strip away oil — great for scalps, but too harsh for your face. Using it on your beard can lead to dry, brittle hair and irritated skin.

How Often Should You Use Beard Wash?

  • 2–3 times a week is ideal for most beards.
  • If you work in a dirty or dusty environment, daily use is fine — as long as you’re using a proper beard wash.
  • Always follow up with beard oil and balm to rehydrate and protect the hair and skin.

How to Wash Your Beard (Properly)

  1. Wet your beard thoroughly with warm water.
  2. Squeeze a small amount of beard wash directly into your beard (or your palm first).
  3. Massage through your beard using your fingertips — make sure you scrub the skin underneath too.
  4. Let it sit for 1–2 minutes so the ingredients can do their thing.
  5. Rinse thoroughly with warm water.
  6. Gently pat dry with a clean towel — don’t rub harshly.

For best results, follow up with Lejonjon Beard Oil and Beard Balm to lock in moisture and keep your beard looking mint.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) about Beard Wash

Q: What does beard wash do?

It gently cleans dirt, sweat, and grime from your beard and the skin underneath — without stripping away your natural oils. It helps prevent dryness, itchiness, and flaking.

Q: Can I use regular shampoo on my beard?

We don’t recommend it. Regular shampoo is too harsh and dries out your beard. It’s better to use a wash specifically made for beards, like ours, to protect and maintain skin hydration.

Q: How often should I wash my beard?

2–3 times per week is ideal. If you’re in dusty or dirty environments, daily use is okay — just follow with oil or balm.

Q: How much beard wash should I use?

About a 10c-coin-sized amount should be plenty for most beards. Use more for longer or thicker beards.

Q: What should I do after washing?

Dry your beard gently with a towel. Then apply beard oil to rehydrate, followed by beard balm or butter to style and lock in moisture.

Q: Where can I get good beard wash in NZ?

Right here at Lejonjon. Our beard washes are small-batch made in Christchurch — no harsh detergents, just clean, effective formulas.
