Ultimate Guide to Beard Brushing: Tips for a Fuller, Neater Look

How to Brush & Comb Your Beard the Right Way

Beard brushing is more than just tidying up. Done right, it helps your beard look fuller, trains hairs to grow in the right direction, prevents split ends, and keeps your beard feeling softer and healthier overall.

This guide covers everything — whether you're working with stubble or rocking a full mane.

When to Start Brushing Your Beard

For short or early-stage beards, we recommend brushing in a downward motion only. This helps train your hair for future growth. Start applying beard oil early to reduce itchiness and promote healthy skin.

Our Beard Oil + Brush Combo is perfect for this stage.

Recommended Prep

For best results, apply beard balm or beard butter before brushing; this softens the hair, helps reduce knots, and improves control.

Step-by-Step Beard Brushing Method

Step 1: Downward Comb

Brushing beard down

Start with a comb. From your cheeks, comb downward to your neckline — front and sides. The teeth should lightly contact your skin. This helps detangle and separate hairs. Repeat until the comb moves through cleanly with minimal catching.

Step 2: Upward Comb

Brushing beard up

Now go upward — from your neckline to your cheeks, pulling away from the skin at the end of each stroke. This helps separate intertwined hairs and fluffs out the beard to train outward growth. Expect some snagging — that means it’s working.

Step 3: Brush Pass

Time to repeat both steps using a boar bristle brush for best results. Brush downward as in Step 1, then up and outward as in Step 2. The brush adds volume and conditions as it spreads product evenly.

Step 4: Final Tidy Pass

Brushing beard straight down

Now tidy it up. Start at your cheek line and brush straight down vertically (not against your neckline). As you reach the ends, give a slight outward flick. Do this across the sides, front, and moustache until neat.

How to Brush Your Beard Under the Chin

Under the chin is often the trickiest part. Brush gently in a downward motion if you’re just starting to grow your beard. For fuller beards, brush upward from the neckline, then guide it outward and down to avoid patchy clumping.

Which Way Should You Brush Your Beard?

Start brushing upward to lift and separate the hairs, then brush downward to style and tame. This helps give volume and keeps your beard from matting close to the face.

Should I Brush My Beard Up or Down?

Do both. Brush up to detangle and stimulate the hair roots, then down to shape and control your look. The combo gives the fullest effect.

How to Comb a Beard for a Fuller Appearance

Use a wide-tooth comb first to separate hairs, followed by a brush to direct them. Always comb from the root outwards in your desired shape, and use beard oil beforehand for less friction.

Does Brushing Your Beard Help Growth?

Indirectly, yes. Brushing stimulates blood flow and distributes natural oils evenly, which can support healthier, stronger growth over time.

Optional: Trim Flyaways

Now’s a great time to trim rogue hairs and neaten your neckline or cheeks. Trim flyaways using our trimming scissors for a clean cut. While electric trimmers work in a pinch, they can cause damage at the follicle and increase split ends.

Short Version

Follow Step 3 and Step 4 using a beard brush. That’s it — quick, effective, and gets your beard looking fuller fast.

FAQs – Beard Brushing

Q: Can I use this method on short beards or stubble?
A: Yes, but stick with a brush only. Brush downward to train growth direction without irritating the skin.

Q: Do I need to apply beard oil or balm first?
A: It’s not required but strongly recommended. It helps reduce pulling and breakage while making your beard more manageable.

Q: How often should I brush my beard?
A: Once a day is ideal, especially after applying oil. More often is fine if you’re detangling or restyling.

Q: Is it better to use scissors or a trimmer?
A: Sharp scissors are better for clean cuts and preventing split ends. Trimmers can cause fraying over time.

Q: How do I know if I’m brushing correctly?
A: Your beard should feel lighter, softer, and look fuller. You’ll notice fewer snags over time as knots reduce.

Hey Michael! I would use the steps in this guide by combing/brushing up and outwards fully, then directly back down in a straight line. You can also use a hair dryer and a comb while combing it out and then down, which will straighten the strands and make them appear longer.

I’m new to the beard world. How should I comb my beard to show length?
